Blended Learning
Blended Learning is a formal education program in which a student learns: at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace; at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home; and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience. Book Reports are informative reports that discuss a book from an objective stance. They are similar to book reviews but focus more on a summary of the work than an evaluation of it. (Purdue)
A Capstone Project is a culminating learning activity that encourages critical thinking and research, promotes conversation and problem solving, and results in real life application of prior and acquired knowledge. (VMAHS)
Choice Based Learning Choice-based education regards students as learning professionals and offers them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests.  Choice-based education supports multiple modes of learning and assessment for the diverse needs of students.
Conferencing (Rdg./Wtg.)-one on one or small group opportunity in which students and the teacher discuss what they have read or what they have written
Dance and Movement is a performing art consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement
Design Brief is a teacher-developed document used to communicate to the student a complete statement of a problem to be solved. It is set in a context in which the issues and parameters are defined, yet flexible enough to be solved in the technology education laboratory setting.” Calvin Klein CCNU 1988
Debate is a discussion or structured contest about an issue or a resolution.  In the context of a classroom, the topic for debate will be guided by the knowledge, skill, and value outcomes in the curriculum.
An Experiment is a test or trial carried out under controlled conditions in order to discover an unknown effect or test a hypothesis. (Merriam-Webster)

Feedback is information provided to a student regarding performance on a task; used as a basis for improvement.

Field Trips are any teaching and learning experiences that require students and teachers to leave the traditional learning environment.
Flipped Classroom is an inverted teaching approach that focuses class time to engage students through active learning rather than lecture alone.  Content delivery is primarily through reading/videos outside of class time. (Cornell University)
Goal Setting is the process of setting goals which allows students to choose where they want to go in school and what they want to achieve…Goal setting gives students long-term vision and short-term motivation. Having sharp, clearly defined goals, which students can measure, will allow them to take pride in accomplishing those goals. (Teacher Vision)
Group Work involves students working collaboratively on set tasks, in or out of the classroom. May include any learning and teaching tasks or activities that require students to work in groups or any formal assessment tasks that require students to work in groups. Groups sizes may vary. Guest Speakers come into the classroom and expose students to real-world life experiences from the position of someone who has been there. Students get to see the insight and perspective of the guest speaker’s particular field.(teachhub.com)
Guided Math is an instructional approach that involves the teachers putting students into small groups and the students work on specific standards being taught in centers around the room.
Guided Reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can all read similar levels of texts.
Interactive Notebooks-a working resource that allows students to show knowledge about content information and includes manipulatives and review materials
Interdisciplinary Projects-individuals integrate knowledge or modes of thinking from 2 or more disciplines to create products, raise questions, solve problems, and offer explanations not possible through single disciplinary means (North Seattle College, www.northseattle.edu)
Journaling-writing that enhances reflection, facilitates critical thought, expresses feeling and encourages writing-focused arguments
Learning Management System is a software program that helps you create, manage and deliver eLearning courses.
Literature Circles are small, temporary discussion groups whose members have chosen to read the same story, poem, article, or book…Each member prepares to take specific responsibilities in the upcoming discussion, and everyone comes to the group with the notes needed to help perform that job. Manipulatives-Activity where students can can use their hands to move or arrange materials to demonstrate  knowledge of a certain topic
Music is the incorporation of instruments and voice to develop music appreciation and sensitivity.
Number Talks are short discussions among a teacher and students about how to solve a particular mental math problem. To start a number talk, the teacher gives the students a short math problem to solve — but the students are not allowed to use a calculator or paper & pencil.
Performance-based assessment measures students’ ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study.Tasks can range from a simple constructed response (e.g., short answer) to a complex design proposal of a sustainable neighborhood.
Presentation is the act or the way in which something is given or shown. This includes students alone, or in groups,  building, preparing, and providing content to a group in various methods of communication (visual, verbal, etc.).

Problem Solving is the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues

Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. Projects are focused on student learning goals and include Essential Project Design Elements: Key Knowledge, Driving Question, Sustained Inquiry, Authenticity, Voice & Choice. Public Speaking is the process or act of performing as speech to a live audience. This type of speech is deliberately structured with three general purposes: to inform, to persuade and to entertain.
Reflection-A technique used with students to critically think about what they have learned or are learning
Research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
A Science Fair event designed to promote and display authentic scientific experiments.
Silent Sustained Reading (or DEAR) Student has a designated time for silent reading
Social Learning is a collaborative approach in which individuals learn new attitudes, values and beliefs through observing and working with others. (Chegg)

STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering,  and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. Theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience. The performers use combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance to communicate.

Visual Arts are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture.
